Hibernation At Wintertime – An Interesting Case Study

By Peter Clarke of PC PAL

I have had two similar jobs recently where my clients have reported that their laptops switched off unexpectedly whilst they were using them.

When I visited my first client I thought that maybe the laptop was overheating and shutting down to protect itself. However on investigation I discovered that the laptop wasn’t actually switching off but was entering a sleep mode. This mode means that the computer screen goes black and the laptop effectively switches off but the system remembers where it was and what it was doing when it is woken up again.

This is actually a normal situation for your computer as there are settings which allow you to tell the computer to enter these modes to save power, for example when you haven’t used the computer for a set amount of time or if you close the lid, it will enter this mode to conserve energy.

Entering sleep mode shouldn’t happen whilst the computer is in active use so why was this happening?

Since the laptop was being used the problem must be due to the computer thinking that the lid was being closed, and I realised something must be activating the ‘closed lid’ sensor. It was then I noticed that my client was wearing a magnetic bracelet and I knew that the ‘closed lid’ sensor responds to a magnet in the lid of the laptop.

My client had a choice, don’t wear the bracelet or, I could change how the laptop reacts to the lid sensor. In both cases I did the latter and they no longer have the unexpected close down of their systems.

If you need some help or wish to discuss this further please don’t hesitate to call me – I’ll be happy to help.
