dvlaDVLA Is Set To Drive Us Mad

The DVLA is at it again, making radical changes to its systems that are not matched to need, and not effectively communicated to the nation.

In October last year the tax disc went, without many owners understanding how it would work.

Many have been unwittingly caught out, especially those who did not know that they could not buy a car and drive it home immediately taxing it first, no matter how impractical that might be.

Now, in five weeks’ time, the driving licence paper counterpart is being withdrawn.

The change is predicted to cause increasing headaches when it comes to hiring cars abroad.

Many car rental companies demand to see the counterpart and news of its withdrawal will be slow to get through.

The replacement solution is bizarre.

Drivers going on holiday can register online with the DVLA in advance, entering their driving licence number and obtaining a code to give a care hire company that is valid for just 72 hours.

This is just not fit for purpose.

It presumes to give a holidaymaker time to get to any destination and pick up a car, yet it is far from unusual to hire one more than three days into a vacation.

I recall, three years ago, starting an 18-day touring holiday with a city break and hiring my car on day five.

Those familiar with the painful queues at the car hire desks in busy destinations like Barcelona and Miami will despair at the prospect of those the other side of the desk scratching their heads and staring at monitors, looking for sense from the DVLA’s systems for every Brit in the line!
